Newsletter #3

Welcome to our occasional newsletter! First of all I just wanted to let you know how we are working with the Covid-19 situation. Work is continuing, I continue to work from my home office and, for the most part, schools and other sports organisations are continuing with their plans for sports pitch installations and upgrades.

It is often very useful to look at how other organisations have gone about investing in an artificial sports pitch. In this edition we take an in depth look at the Lea Valley High School project in Enfield.

Lea Valley High School

The work took place at Lea Valley High School, Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield, North London and the objective was to resurface 5,900 m2 of a worn out sand and rubber filled hybrid surface for a Private Finance Initiative supplier.

What expertise did we bring to the project?

We were able to fast track the tender process. You will see below why this became an important factor. It also helped keep costs down.

Using our industry knowledge we selected a list of suitable contractors that specialise in this type of work.

We were able to advise and make recommendations, particularly as to which of the four different 3G playing surfaces being offered was most suitable for the intended use.

We also made recommendations in respect of which surface offered best value for money.

Were there any challenges?

There are always challenges! We did have to schedule the work to be undertaken in the school holidays as there were financial penalties in the event of the pitch not being available during term time. This meant that the fast-tracked tender process was a crucial element.

We also had our share of British Summertime weather. Whilst on site in August it rained every week creating the threat of delays when it came to the spreading of 200 tonnes of rubber crumb infill. This product sticks together when wet.

Why was this project important to the school?

Firstly, for safety reasons. The compacted surface was a Health and Safety risk when Head Impact Assessment criteria was used.

Secondly the poor condition of the pitch minimised the school’s external lettings income.

Thirdly, during wet weather and downpours the existing surface didn’t drain effectively which resulted in reduced pitch availability for sports activities.

What were our recommendations and what exactly did we install?

We selected Greenfields (Sports Surfaces) Uk Ltd as the Principal Contractor. We are familiar with their work and key competances.

For the pitch itself we installed a Slide Max Pro Carpet with a 60mm pile height.

The perimeter footpaths were all taken up and re-laid in order to complete the project and to give the pitch a really smart "just like new" look.

Also a maintenance contract was established for the new pitch. Greenfields were instructed to maintain the surface.

What were the outcomes and benefits?

The Health and Safety issues were resolved with the result that school children and community users could again enjoy a safe playing environment for their sports and outdoor activities.

The school was now in a position to maximise the use of school income from pitch lettings to local football teams and clubs. We have noticed their promotion of the pitch in local listings!
